How to Choose Post Preferences in TNPSC Applications

In combined exams your rank decides when you pick; your preference order decides what you get. Most candidates spend months on preparation and minutes on preferences, invert that.

Worth knowing

  • Rank decides when you pick, preferences decide what you get, spend real time on the order
  • Rank by your own constraints (location, transferability) before chasing the highest pay
  • Fill every preference you would actually accept, blanks can forfeit options at counselling

Step by step

01List what actually differs between posts

Pay level, department, promotion path, transferability and work type. Two posts with identical pay can differ hugely in postings and growth, compare on our post salary pages.

02Rank by your life, not the herd

A district-anchored post beats a higher-paying transferable one if you can't relocate. Decide your constraints first, then order posts inside them.

03Fill every preference you would accept

Leaving preferences blank can forfeit options at counselling. Order everything you would genuinely join; omit only posts you would refuse.

04Keep evidence of your final order

Save the submitted preference list PDF. Counselling day is not the time to discover what you clicked months earlier.

Frequently asked questions

Can preferences be changed after submission?
Only within official correction windows, if the notification provides one. Treat the first submission as final.
Do preferences matter more than rank?
Rank decides your turn; preferences decide the outcome at your turn. A great rank with careless preferences still lands the wrong post.
Should I list posts I'm unsure about?
List any post you would genuinely join, in your true order. Omit only posts you would refuse outright, an unfilled preference you would have accepted simply removes it from your options.
