Reading the cut-offs
Three patterns to keep in mind when setting a target score.
01 · Aim above OC
Target the OC male cut-off, not the qualifying minimum.
Qualifying marks (40 % / 30 %) only get you into mains. The real cut-off — the marks that secure a final selection — runs much higher.
02 · Syllabus shifts
Cut-offs can double after a syllabus revision.
Group 1 went from 120 in 2017 to 204 in 2019 once the new syllabus dropped reasoning-heavy questions. Old papers undershoot the bar.
03 · Category gap
The OC-to-ST spread can be 30+ marks.
Reservation closes a wider gap than you think — but only if you actually clear sectional cut-offs in each subject paper.
