TNPSC Questions, Answered Straight
The rules, numbers and process questions every aspirant asks, answered in plain words and verified against official TNPSC sources.
Exam basics
No. TNPSC does not apply negative marking in Group 1, Group 2/2A or Group 4 exams. An unanswered question scores the same as a wrong one, so attempt all questions.
OTR is TNPSC's mandatory candidate profile. You register once, pay the registration fee, and it stays valid for 5 years, after which each exam application only needs the per-exam fee.
Yes. Since 2022, TNPSC combined exams include a Tamil Eligibility-cum-Scoring Test of 100 questions for 150 marks. You must score at least 40% (60 marks) for your paper to be evaluated further.
90 marks out of 300 for all categories, plus at least 40% (60 of 150) in the Tamil Eligibility-cum-Scoring Test for it to be counted.
Group 2 covers interview posts and Group 2A covers non-interview posts. Both are recruited through the same CCSE-II examination; 2A selection is decided purely on written marks.
CCSE stands for Combined Civil Services Examination. TNPSC groups its recruitments into CCSE-I (Group 1), CCSE-II (Group 2/2A) and CCSE-IV (Group 4 and VAO).
TNPSC exams are set at SSLC-to-degree standard with a Tamil Nadu-focused syllabus, while UPSC is broader and more analytical. TNPSC is more predictable, but competition per seat is still intense.
General Studies and Aptitude questions are bilingual, Tamil and English, so you can answer them from the English text. The Tamil Eligibility-cum-Scoring Test must be answered in Tamil.
No. Calculators, phones, smart watches and all electronic devices are banned in TNPSC exam halls. Aptitude questions are designed to be solved by hand.
TNPSC aims to conduct Group 4 annually under its exam calendar, though the actual gap between notifications has varied between one and two years depending on vacancies.
A gazetted officer holds a post notified in the official gazette, with authority to attest documents. TNPSC Group 1 posts like Deputy Collector and DSP are gazetted.
TNPSC prescribes no specific dress code. Wear simple clothing and avoid items that complicate frisking; all electronic devices and smart accessories are banned.
Eligibility
PSTM means Persons Studied in Tamil Medium. TNPSC reserves 20% of vacancies in each category, on a preferential basis, for candidates who studied the qualifying education in Tamil medium.
Yes. Candidates from other states can apply, but they are treated as general category (OC) regardless of their community certificate, and Tamil language requirements still apply.
Yes. TNPSC Group 4 (including VAO, Junior Assistant and Typist posts) requires only SSLC (10th pass). Most other groups require a bachelor's degree.
For Group 4, there is no upper age limit for SC, SCA, ST, MBC/DNC, BC and BCM candidates who have the SSLC qualification. For degree-level exams, reserved categories get 5 years over the general limit.
Preparation
Only 20 prescribed adhikarams are in the Group 4 syllabus, not all 133. They include Ozhukkamudaimai, Poraiyudaimai, Ookkamudaimai, Virundhombal, Kalvi, Anbudaimai and Sengonmai.
No. TNPSC exams are SSLC-to-degree standard with a published syllabus and predictable pattern; thousands clear them through self-study with the right materials and consistent practice.
Three to six months of consistent preparation is enough for most candidates, since the paper is SSLC standard. The Tamil test (half the paper) and the two 20-question GS units deserve the most time.
Substantial. Both draw General Studies from the same SSLC-standard units, polity, economy, history, science, geography and Tamil Nadu topics, and both include the 100-question Tamil Eligibility Test.
Selection & process
CV is the stage where TNPSC checks your original certificates, education, age, community, PSTM and any special claims, against what you entered at application.
After certificate verification, candidates are called in rank order to choose from available posts and departments. Your final allotment depends on rank, category, communal rotation and the preferences you submit.
Communal rotation is the 200-point roster Tamil Nadu uses to distribute vacancies across categories: GT, BC, BCM, MBC/DNC, SC, SCA and ST, in a fixed repeating order.
TNPSC publishes a tentative answer key after the exam and opens an objection window, usually about a week, where you submit representations with evidence through the official portal.
For Group 1 and Group 2, prelims qualifiers write a descriptive mains exam. Group 4 is a single-stage exam, so qualifiers go directly to certificate verification and counselling.
Group 1 posts and Group 2 (interview posts) include an oral test after mains. Group 2A and Group 4 have no interview; selection is written marks plus certificate verification.
Total marks in the qualifying papers decide rank, and the communal rotation roster distributes vacancies across categories. Post allotment then follows rank plus your submitted preferences.
The reserve list holds the next candidates in merit order after the main selection list. If a selected candidate does not join, replacements are drawn from it.
Most TNPSC posts carry a probation of 2 years within a continuous period of 3 years, during which your service is assessed before confirmation.
Most TNPSC posts have no physical test. Exceptions are uniformed and field posts like Forest Guard and Forest Watcher, which include physical standards and endurance tests.
