Basic pay vs in-hand: how the math works
The figure in the notification is not what credits to your account.

Start with basic pay for your level. DA and HRA are added on top of it to make gross salary. Then NPS pension contribution, health fund and professional tax come off, what remains is your in-hand salary.

HRA depends on where you are posted, which is why two people at the same level take home different amounts in Chennai and a taluk town.

Frequently asked questions

What is the in-hand salary for TNPSC Group 1 posts?
In-hand salary ranges from ₹56k to ₹206k per month depending on the post, posting location and applicable allowances. The post-wise table above shows basic pay and in-hand figures for every post.
What is the starting salary of a Deputy Collector?
Deputy Collector is at pay Level 22 with basic pay ₹56,100. With DA and HRA added and standard deductions removed, the in-hand figure is ₹72,000 - ₹85,000.
Why is in-hand salary lower than gross salary?
Deductions come off the gross: NPS pension contribution, health fund and professional tax are the usual ones. The remainder is what credits to your account each month.
Does the salary grow after joining?
Yes. Annual increments move you up within your pay level, DA is revised periodically, and promotions move you to a higher level with a larger basic pay.

Pay levels, basic pay and allowance rates are compiled from official TNPSC notifications and TN pay commission orders. Sources: TNPSC official notifications. Figures are indicative and may change with each official notification. Data last reviewed: July 2026.
