How to Score 120+ in the TNPSC Tamil Eligibility Test
100 questions, 150 marks, and a double edge: score under 40% and your whole paper is void; score high and every mark counts toward rank. This is the highest-leverage paper in the exam.
Worth knowing
- 40% (60 of 150) is the survival floor, below it the other 100 questions are never evaluated
- Ilakkanam and the vocabulary units are roughly 55 pure-pattern questions, the highest-return daily drill in the whole exam
- The prescribed literature is a finite named list, not the whole Tamil canon, prepare exactly what the syllabus names
Step by step
01Master ilakkanam patterns (25Q)
Pirithu ezhuthudhal, sandhi pizhai, letter-confusion pairs (ல-ள-ழ, ன-ண-ந, ர-ற) and word-class identification are pattern questions, drilled, not memorised. Daily ten-minute drills convert this unit fully.
02Bank the vocabulary units (30Q)
Sollagarathi (15Q) and ezhuthum thiran (15Q) reward lists: oru ezhuthu oru mozhi, one-word-many-meanings, sentence ordering, thodar types. Flashcard territory.
03Prepare exactly the prescribed literature (15Q)
The syllabus names it: 20 Thirukkural adhikarams, Naladiyar, the aranool set, and the listed Tamil scholars. Not the whole canon, exactly this list.
04Don't skip kalai sorkal and translation (15Q)
Technical-term Tamil equivalents and simple translation are the most neglected 15 questions in the paper, and the easiest full marks for two evenings of work.
05Practice comprehension under time (15Q)
Vasithal passages plus uvamai and pazhamozhi meanings. Reading speed in Tamil script is trainable and decides whether you finish the paper.
